BVM Sisters to mark golden jubilees

Two Sisters of Charity, BVM, with ties to the Diocese of Davenport, will celebrate 50 years in religious life this summer.

Sr. Higgins

Sister Veronica (Rosine) Higgins is a native of Chicago and entered the BVM congregation on July 31, 1963. She professed first vows on Feb. 2, 1966, and final vows on Jan. 6, 1974. Sr. Higgins taught elementary school in Des Moines and at Iowa City Catholic in Iowa City from 1976-77.  In Illinois, she taught elementary and secondary school in East Moline and in Chicago, where she also served on staff at Mundelein College and ministered in clinical pastoral work. She also served as staff chaplain in Arlington Heights, Springfield and Belleville, Ill. Since 2005, she has served as staff chaplain in St. Louis, Mo.

Sr. Stafford

Sister Mary Stasia Stafford was born in Davenport and entered the BVM congregation on July 31, 1963. She professed first vows on Feb. 2, 1966, and final vows on Jan. 29, 1972. She taught elementary school since 1978 at St. Paul the Apostle in Davenport where she taught religion and worked with academic support. She also taught elementary school and later served as director of religious education at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb.
Srs. Higgins and Stafford are among eight golden jubilarians who will gather in the Mount Carmel Motherhouse Chapel in Dubuque on July 21 for a liturgy of thanksgiving.
