The Catholic Messenger introduces a new podcast for the Hispanic community called “Adelita Comunitaria” and hosted by Gloria Mancilla, a member of St. Anthony Parish in Davenport.
The podcast “disseminates news and information relevant to the entire Hispanic community,” Mancilla said. “We will talk about issues of health services, immigration, family, faith, education and everything that concerns our community. The name ‘Adelita Comunitaria’ is inspired by Las Adelitas de Aztlan, who advocated for civil rights for Mexican-Americans during the 1960s, especially in the California area, including better conditions for workers, the rights of women in the Latin community, and protested against police brutality.”
Mancilla said she hopes to implement those advocacy efforts at this time in history, “when we face many challenges in our society that impact all areas of our daily lives. As a resident of Davenport, I have experienced the challenges that minority populations experience.” She said a language barrier and the lack of services and resources in Spanish persist.
“I invite the community to follow us on our social networks of the same name, ‘Adelita Comunitaria,’ to stay informed and to learn about the social programs and services that have been created to help improve the quality of life for the Hispanic community,” Mancilla said.
“Finally, I thank The Catholic Messenger and KALA-FM Radio of St. Ambrose University in Davenport for including and supporting me on their platforms and I ask for your support and prayers in this project. I humbly invite you to listen to our first podcast, ‘Matthew 25:36: I was in prison and you came to visit me.’”
