BETTENDORF — An evening of education and fellowship for Catholics involved with religious education and parish ministry will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish on Sept. 21.

“It’s really to get their enthusiasm going for the beginning of the year, to give them a jump start on the year and get in the (religious education) mindset,” said Joyce Kloft. She chairs Ministers of Religious Education (M.O.R.E.) of the Davenport and Clinton deaneries, which is sponsoring the event. Attendance is open to anyone in the Diocese of Davenport, she said.

The in-service will begin with a lasagna meal from 5-5:45 p.m. Joe Paprocki, national consultant for faith formation at Loyola Press and author of numerous books, will begin his presentation at 6 p.m.

Paprocki said he will focus on how parish educators and ministers can teach people to become sacramental in spirit and action. “My goal is to equip catechists with skills to teach in a way that is not solely informative but is also transformative. … the focus is to recognize that in order to touch the hearts of those we serve, we who teach must use a language of mystery; a language that transcends words and relies on sign, symbol, gesture, music, silence and storytelling.”
A ministry fair with representatives from Circle of Grace, New Theology of the Body, the diocesan Office of Faith Formation and other groups will be available during the in-service.

Cost of the in-service is $10 per person or $50 per parish. Contact your parish leader or mail the form to Our Lady of Victory, 1627 W. 42 St., Davenport, Iowa, 52806, attn. Jennifer Wemhoff. Walk-ins will be accepted.

Kloft said she hopes Paprocki “can really get us excited about our ministry and going out and doing our work!”
