Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Many of us know or recall a sister, brother or order priest who has shown us the ideal of love, generosity and responsibility — a love that demanded trust in providence and acceptance of financial insecurity. They selflessly served those in their care, investing in people rather than pensions, working for many years for little, if any, pay.
The number of religious past age 70 continues to disproportionately outnumber those under age 70. In keeping with their vows and traditions, all religious who are able continue to minister and to pray. However, there are among our elderly religious many who suffer the same pains and indignities associated with aging that you might see in your own families. Their institutes are finding it increasingly difficult to meet the challenges of rapidly escalating healthcare costs.
This is our opportunity to share in their care; let us speak for them and care for them. Catholic parishes in the Diocese of Davenport will conduct the 28th annual national appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious on Dec. 12-13. This collection benefits over 33,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests across the nation.
I ask you to give to those who have given a lifetime. Please be as generous as possible in supporting this appeal and hold our religious in your hearts and your prayers, journeying with them in hope and growing with them in love and gratitude.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Muchos de nosotros conocemos o recordamos a una hermana, hermano o sacerdote religioso quien nos ha mostrado el ideal del amor, la generosidad y la responsabilidad — un amor que exige una confianza en la providencia y la aceptación de una inseguridad económica. Ellos sin egoísmos sirvieron a aquellos que tuvieron a su cuidado, invirtiendo su tiempo en las personas en vez de sus pensiones, trabajando por muchos años por muy poco, o por nada.
El número de religiosos que tienen más de 70 años sigue siendo desproporcional al número de menores de 70. Manteniendo con sus votos y tradiciones, todos los religiosos que aún pueden, continúan ejerciendo su ministerio y su oración. Sin embargo, hay muchos entre nuestros religiosos ancianos que sufren de dolores y situaciones asociadas con la vejez, que nosotros también podríamos ver en nuestras propias familias. Sus instituciones religiosas encuentran dificultades muy grandes para cubrir con todos los retos que los costos de salud tienen.
Esta es una oportunidad para compartir en sus cuidados, hablemos por ellos y cuídemelos.
