SAU to offer marching band

DAVENPORT — St. Ambrose University has announced that it is developing an Athletic Bands Program for fall 2016. Beginning as a stadium band, the ensemble will grow to a full marching band by fall 2018, performing at home football games, playoffs and for occasional community events. When fully developed, the marching band will have more than 100 members. Participation in the Athletic Bands Program will open up additional scholarship opportunities for students.

SAU-logo-color-2013“We’re very excited to add a marching band to our array of music ensembles,” said John Cooper, vice president for enrollment management. “Providing this additional music participation experience, as well as new scholarships, makes this a great opportunity for students who have participated in high school marching bands — or students who just want to be a part of providing a fun and positive game day environment.”

Prospective students interested in this program and in auditioning for scholarships, should contact the Admissions Office at (563) 333-6300 or admit@sau.edu. As with all SAU ensembles and choirs, students do not have to major in music to qualify for the marching band or these additional scholarships.

“St. Ambrose is one of only a few universities of its size to offer the opportunity to perform in a marching band, which is consistent with the education we offer that is firmly grounded in the liberal arts,” said Paul Koch, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs. “The band will provide another way for students from multiple disciplines to connect and build relationships while making music together and extending their education outside of the classroom in a very important way.“

The SAU Marching Band will offer many leadership opportunities such as drum major and manager positions. The band will use standard marching instrumentation and a flag corps or color guard will be considered if there is enough interest.
