In the Nov. 19 issue of The Catholic Messenger Father Bud Grant reviews Chapters 4 and 5 of Laudato Si. In his review he says that in paragraph 171 Pope Francis comes out in favor of carbon trading. I have a great deal of respect for Fr. Grant and his scholarship so I read and reread article 171 and cannot draw the same conclusion as he has. As I read it, the encyclical clearly says the opposite: “The strategy of buying and selling carbon credits can lead to a new form of speculation which would not help reduce the emission of polluting gases worldwide … in no way does it allow for the radical change which present circumstances require.
