Pro-life appointment blocked by senators

To the Editor:
My friend, Colleen Pasnik was honored by Gov. Terry Branstad with an appointment to the Iowa Board of Medicine, but the sitting senators blocked the appointment because she  “was known to associate with anti-abortion activists” (Waterloo Courier, April 13, 2012).
Two-thirds of the votes were needed; there were 29 votes for and 18 against her confirmation.
Since the Board of Medicine undoubtedly exists for the welfare of the health of Iowans, it would seem that a person who has a long history of championing life issues would be a valuable asset to the state. Apparently the 18 senators have very different values and would prefer pro-abortion activists be on that board.
