Sr. Downey to celebrate 50th jubilee

Sister Rita Ann Downey, DC, a native a Keokuk, will celebrate her golden jubilee as a Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul on Feb. 14.

She attended St. Vincent Elementary and graduated from St. Peter High School in Keokuk. She entered the Daughters of Charity on June 25, 1958.

Sr. Downey received her bachelor’s degree from Marillac College in St. Louis and a master’s from Loyola University in New Orleans.

She served as principal at St. Vincent School in Keokuk from 1984-90. She taught or served as principal at schools in Louisiana, Texas and Missouri.

After her assignment in Keokuk, Sr. Downey served as provincial secretary for the Daughters of Charity Provincial Office in St. Louis, where she served for 17 years.

Since 2008, she has been as administrative assistant at Child Center-Marygrove in St. Louis – a residential facility for troubled and abused children.

A jubilee celebration with her community will be celebrated Feb. 14 in St. Louis.
