Sustainable Clinton to mark anniversary

CLINTON – Sustainable Clinton (SC), the volunteer group formed to promote environmental sustainability and make Clinton a more environmentally friendly and resilient place to live, will observe its first anniversary this month with much to celebrate.

Convened by the Clinton Franciscan Center for Active Nonviolence and Peacemaking, SC meets monthly at The Canticle, home of the Sisters of St. Francis, for about one hour on a Sunday afternoon.

The upcoming meeting – on Sunday, Sept. 18 – will be a departure for the group. Members will gather at 5 p.m. for a potluck supper at The Canticle, 841 13th Ave. N., Clinton, to take the “$5 Challenge” and win back the value meal.

Slow Food USA, a national non-profit that believes everyone has the right to good, clean and fair food, has issued the $5 Challenge – bidding everyone to either cook a “slow food” meal for $5 or less, or participate in a potluck gathering to share home-cooked, natural foods on the mid-weekend of September.

The public is invited to participate by bringing a dish to share that costs no more than $5 to prepare. Please bring the recipe to share as well. “We ask everyone to bring their own table service,” said Laura Anderson, co-coordinator of the Center and group facilitator. “The Canticle will provide beverages.  We will begin promptly at 5 p.m.  We ask guests to call in advance, if possible, and let us know they are coming so we can be prepared.”

“This program is a wonderful way for us to celebrate our first anniversary,” noted Anderson.  It brings together many of the ideas that we have been exploring in past gatherings such as buying and eating “local foods” – food that is produced locally and that is fresh and doesn’t cost lots of money and petroleum to transport to our tables.  We have explored “edible gardening” and moved well into planning for a revitalized community garden.  Thanks to the work of Linda Boardsen and our community garden committee, we will be reviewing progress on that program following our potluck supper.”

Future programs will include a presentation by Brad Seward of the Clinton County Solid Waste Agency on local recycling efforts and a peek at some “Green Fashions.”
