Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Beth E. Fox, 84, a resident of Davenport will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Davenport.

Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. p.m. on Tuesday at the Halligan McCabe De Vries Funeral Home, Davenport, where the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3 p.m. In keeping with Beth’s wishes cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral Mass. Private family graveside services will be on Thursday at Davenport Memorial Park.

Beth died Saturday, Dec.11, 2010, at the Kahl Home for the Aged following an extended illness.

Beth E. Knecht was born Oct. 11, 1926 in Davenport, the daughter of Raymond and Mabel (Timothy) Knecht.

Beth was united in marriage to James Francis Fox, Aug. 19, 1946, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Waterloo. He preceded her in death Aug. 11, 2006.

In 1959 Beth was recognized as Iowa Polio Mother of the Year. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from St. Ambrose (College) University.  She was employed as a kindergarten teacher for over 27 years in the Davenport School District. She was awarded the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching.  After retiring from teaching she was fondly known as the “Story Lady” at St. Ambrose University Children’s Campus. 

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the wonderful care their mother received from the Kahl Home for the Aged, Genesis West nursing staff and Genesis Hospice.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Ambrose Children’s Campus or the Kahl Home.

Survivors include her children, a daughter, Maribeth (Kevin) Madden, Roland, Iowa; sons, James C. Fox, Kent, Ohio, William R. (Kathi) Fox, Davenport and Michael T. Fox, Davenport; affectionately known as “Mimi” to her 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Betty Gavin, Hannibal, Mo, and Barb Fox, Ellicott City, Md.

Beth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim and a sister Dorothy Dietz.
