All Catholic students in grades eight through 12 at public, private and parochial schools in Davenport and Bettendorf are invited to participate in the 2017 Knights of Columbus Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest.
Students are encouraged to write a 500- to 750-word essay on the theme: “Going to the Peripheries.”
Discuss the role of the Catholic Church going to the peripheries, and then select one of the following ideas to complete the essay:
a) Describe the work of one widely known current Catholic who went to the periphery.
b) Describe the work of one widely known historic Catholic who went to the periphery.
c) Describe the work of one person in your life who helps alleviate human suffering.
The essay must reflect the theme, consist of original work and be typed. The student’s name should appear only on the official entry form, available at http://tinyurl.com/y9bqucqt.
The local contest will be hosted by St. Paul the Apostle Knights of Columbus Council in Davenport. All contestants on the local level will be recognized for participation. Written, parental consent is required.
The top three international level winners for each grade will receive monetary awards: $300 for first place and $100 each for two runners-up in each grade level. Additional prizes will be awarded to local and state winners.
