Former educator Sr. Costello dies

Sister Barbara Costello, CHM, 86, died May 6 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston.

Barbara Frances Costello was born Nov. 12, 1929, in Evanston, Ill., to Charles Stephen Costello Sr. and Catherine Mulholland Costello. Barbara entered the congregation of the Humility of Mary in 1951, professing vows in 1954.

Sister’s education included a BA from Marycrest College in Davenport; MA from St. Thomas College, in St. Paul, Minn.; MPS from Loyola University in Chicago and a certificate in administration-education from Creighton University in Omaha.

For 15 years she served in elementary schools: in Iowa including St. Mary in Ottumwa, St. Anthony in Des Moines and St. Vincent in Davenport. She also served at St. Austin in St. Paul, Minn., and as administrator and teacher at St. Pius X in Rock Island, Ill. Sister’s pastoral ministry was at St. Ambrose in Milan and St. Patrick in Andalusia, both in Illinois. She cared deeply for divorced Catholics and assisted them as a notary-auditor for the Diocese of Peoria, Ill., marriage tribunal. She retired to Bishop Drumm in 2010 where she lived until her death.

Visitation for Sister will be May 12 at the Humility of Mary Center in Davenport with a rosary beginning the visitation at 4 p.m. and a vigil service concluding the visitation at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be May 13 at 11 a.m. at the Humility of Mary Center followed by interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Davenport.
Memorials may be made to the Congregation of the Humility of Mary.
