To the Editor:
Many people are decrying the uncivil tone in politics these days, with some politicians sinking even to personal insult and mockery. But I wonder if Catholics realize that the same tone has taken root in many of the high profile conservative Catholic Internet blogs. These forums — which include The Church Militant, Fr. Z’s Blog, The Remnant and the Lepanto Institute — routinely employ insulting, mocking, mean-spirited language toward fellow Catholics. This incites their online commenters to worse language. They particularly target many of the bishops and cardinals, and are no fans of the pope. They seem also to have an unhealthy obsession about who will be condemned in the afterlife. The tone is in such contrast to our Pope Francis and his vision of the world. Is this truly what our church is about? It’s a pity.
