Support Sacred Heart Cathedral

To the Editor:
We are members of St. Mary Parish in Sigourney. Recently we were traveling to Illinois to visit family. Tom suggested that we stop to tour Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport as we had never been there and knew there was a fundraising drive underway to renovate the cathedral.
The secretary graciously offered to show us around the cathedral and grounds. There is limited parking, with some people having to park along the street. While the cathedral is very beautiful inside, we see a very strong need for renovation. There is a small supply room that’s been converted into a bathroom. No handicapped-accessible restrooms are available, which in today’s world is very important. The old school building is about a block from the cathedral. That is where receptions are held following important liturgies. It would be ideal to avoid inclement weather and have a gathering room and reception hall attached to the cathedral.
This is the bishop’s church and we think it needs to be in a good state of repair that we can all be proud of. We urge you to support this endeavor.
