Appreciation for soon-to-be priest

For The Catholic Messneger

I have written this as a witness to the holiness of a priest-elect, Guillermo Trevino. I first met Guillermo at an Encounter with God’s Call event at Conception Seminary College in Missouri. It was Sunday and the afternoon was free for us visitors. I was still getting lost. Lucky for me, Guillermo came and found me. He took hours out of his day to lead me around the campus and answer the many questions I had. He did this even though he was preparing for finals. This is how our friendship started.

Guillermo Treviño

I went to Conception and he went on to Mundelein. These colleges are eight hours apart. Yet, he always made an effort to stay in touch with me. He would call once a month or so just to check in and see how I was doing. He has always been good at contacting the other seminarians as well. I see in this that he is a true man of communion. He always reaches out to others and this truly builds up the body of Christ. As time went on, I saw him overcome many obstacles and trials in seminary. No matter how hard the trial, he always seemed to radiate a certain joy. I could always put my money on Guillermo to be like Andy Dufresne, to persevere through trials and come out on the other side as a better man.

Above all, I see soon-to-be Father Trevino as a true man of God. There are many other good things I could say about him. The most important thing is that he will truly be a bridge for people to God. He shows this in all he does. I have never met a man more worthy of so great a gift as holy orders. It was an honor to walk with him on his journey so far. I cannot wait to see what he does as a priest. To Padre Guillermo, I say “ad multos annos” (many more years).
