Sr. Orozco, former missionary, dies

Sister Ana María Orozco, 87, died Sept. 5 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston.

She was born Oct. 25, 1926, in Mexico City, Mexico. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary on Sept. 8, 1948, professing vows on July 28, 1951. She studied medicine in Mexico City for two years and received a bachelor of arts degree from Marycrest College in Davenport in 1949, and also a master of arts in Spanish from the University of Iowa in 1954.
Sr. Orozco taught at Marycrest College from 1949-68. She was a missionary in the Diocese of San Cristóbal de Las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico, from 1968-2004. She retired to Humility of Mary Center in 2004, moved to Bishop Drumm in 2014, and died after a brief stay.
She was named Woman of the Year 1989 in Mexico City and received the United Nations Banner of Peace Award in 1993.
Visitation is Sept. 11 from 4-7 p.m. at the Humility of Mary Center with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Humility of Mary Center, Magnificat Chapel, 820 W. Central Park Ave, Davenport. Burial follows in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Humility of Mary.
