Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The 2013 storm season has only just begun and already we have witnessed two major tornado episodes in one Oklahoma metropolitan area and the prospect for an active hurricane season for the coastal states. Relief efforts of many government and social aid agencies, including Catholic Charities USA, are already delivering relief aid. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is providing immediate aid to the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City from funds still available from the 2011 tornado collection.
Unfortunately, devastating storms and natural disasters are becoming more and more commonplace; there are still needs to address for the dioceses affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Church must serve as a primary source of healing and peace when tragedies such as this occur. However, the Church itself is both an aid responder and a victim. So many of the Church’s structures have been damaged and their resources depleted. This makes it even more difficult to provide aid, comfort and, most importantly, the sacraments to those in need.
In order to be part of the request of the USCCB and the larger Church response, a special diocesan collection will be held on the weekend of July 13-14. The funds collected in this one-time appeal for the 2013 storms and disasters will be used to support the efforts of the USCCB and Catholic Charities, USA, the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church, as they respond to immediate emergency needs for such necessities as water, food, shelter and medical care, as well as to the long-term need to rebuild after widespread destruction and to the pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church.

La temporada de las tormentas del 2013 solo ha empezado y hemos sido testigos de dos episodios de dos gran tornados en la metrópolis del área de Oklahoma y la posibilidad de una temporada activa de huracanes para los estados de la costa. Esfuerzos de ayuda de agencias del gobierno y sociales, incluyendo Catholic Charities USA, ya están proporcionando ayuda.
