Andy Greeley died last week. To a great many Catholics of mature age, that news raises up memories of a feisty Chicago-Irishman with the sharp-jawed face of a leprechaun and the spirit of a priest passionate about everything, especially his faith and his Church.
Through his newspaper columns and other writing, Father Andrew Greeley, priest of the Chicago Archdiocese, became the best known critic of the Church in America. But his was the criticism of a lover exasperated when his beloved was less than her best. He could be caustic about the bishops.
