Exploring Christian consumption

DAVENPORT – “The Christian Consumer,” a presentation by Laura Hartman, will be held Saturday, April 20, from 7-8 p.m. at the Humility of Mary Center, 820 W. Central Park Ave.
Hartman, author of “The Christian Consumer: Living Faithfully in a Fragile World,” explores consumption from an ethical and a Christian perspective. The Christian tradition, broadly construed, offers many insights: it counsels ascetic restraint, joyful savoring, neighbor love, and pursuit of God’s kingdom through one’s consumption decisions, she notes.
Hartman, who also is assistant professor of religion at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., has become an advocate for public transit and a regular shopper at Goodwill and the farmers’ market.
