Opal R. Sparrow, 96, a resident of Escondido, California and a former longtime resident of Davenport died Saturday, May 26, 2012 in Escondido.

The family will greet friends at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport, on Monday, June 4, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., when the service to celebrate Opal’s life will begin.  Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Davenport.

Opal Ruth Smith was born April 19, 1916, in Lineville, Iowa, a daughter of Frank and Sarah Ellen (Locke) Smith.  She was united in marriage to Riley J. Sparrow, on December 27, 1958.  He preceded her in death on November 16, 1998.

In earlier years, Opal had managed the Photo Studio at the former Petersen’s Harned Von Maur Department Store.  She and Riley moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1994, and she then moved to Escondido in 2000.  Opal was a former member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport, and was an avid reader.  She enjoyed playing Bingo and other games.

Survivors include her daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara and Kenneth Miller, Oceanside, CA; and Marlene Cahow, Columbia, Missouri; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Riley, and sisters, Bessie “Bekky” Walker, Hazel Hutchison and Erma Venn.  May they rest in peace.
