Deacon Close to be ordained a priest June 23

The Diocese of Davenport anticipates the ordination of a new priest this month.
Bishop Martin Amos will ordain Deacon Corey Close to the priesthood Saturday, June 23, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport.
A native of Northbrook, Ill., Deacon Close attended the University of Iowa where he earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science. He then completed two years of pre-theology for the Diocese of Davenport at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Ill. He is completing his major seminary studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome.
On Oct. 6, 2011, he was ordained a transitional deacon by Cardinal William Levada at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
During his studies for the priesthood, Deacon Close completed internships at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Bettendorf in 2007, St. Mary Parish in Riverside in 2010 and St. Joseph Parish in DeWitt in 2011. He attended a summer program at the Institute of Priestly Formation in 2008 and studied Latin at the University College Cork in Cork, Ireland, during summer 2009.
Following his ordination to the priesthood, he will celebrate his first Mass on June 24 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Parish in Iowa City. He also will celebrate Mass on July 1 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Norbert Parish in Northbrook, Ill.
Through the summer, the new priest will assist at parishes throughout the diocese.
This fall he will attend the John Paul II Institute in Washington, D.C., to complete his Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) in marriage and family life.
