Richard was a vital member of Sacred Heart parish, where he had many friends. He was a familiar face to many people throughout the Diocese of Davenport, who could always count on him for assistance during visits to the Cathedral.

Richard remained active until his recent illness. He attended daily Mass, took walks in and around his residence at Silvercrest and enjoyed bird-watching, reading, playing cribbage and card games and assembling jigsaw puzzles. In his younger years, he loved fishing and canoeing. Richard was also an avid chess player.
