Mrs. Ash was born on May 7, 1919, the first of twin daughters of Charles and Eva Metzger, in Iowa City.  She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1937 and continued her education at Irish Business School in Iowa City with emphasis in bookkeeping and office work.  Dorothy worked at Penney’s, Pipers Candy Store, Iowa State Bank, Daily Iowan Newspaper and a real estate office in Iowa City.

On February 5, 1948, she was united in marriage to Richard E. Ash in Iowa City at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and shortly after moved to Davenport, where they raised five daughters.  Richard preceded her in death on December 6, 2007.  They had shared over 59 years of marriage together.

Mrs. Ash was a volunteer with the USO during WWII.  She also volunteered with Adam’s School PTA, had a membership with the Davenport Moose Club and was member of the Holy Family Catholic Church since 1952.  She enjoyed the company of her family, especially at picnics and holiday, traveling in her younger years, tending her flowers and playing cards (mostly UNO in her later years).  She was a devoted wife and caregiver for her husband until his death.  She was a sensitive, intuitive, caring and loving Mother.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or to the charity of your choice.

Dorothy is survived by her five daughters; Connie Ash of Eldridge, Susan Hyvari of Livonia, Michigan, Jane (Dale) Goldensoph of Davenport, Judy (Rick) Claussen of Le Claire and Debbie Ash of Davenport; 9 grandchildren, Todd, Eric, Pam, Lynn, Tiffany, Nicole, Christopher, Brad and Dorothy; 7 great-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard, twin sister Lois Anderson, brother Raymond, her parents and four aunts.
