Leo T. Broughton, 92, a resident of the Iowa Masonic Home, Bettendorf, formerly a longtime resident of Davenport and Blue Grass, died Monday, July 25, 2011, at the Iowa Masonic Home.
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, downtown Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. The family will greet friends Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan – McCabe – DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport.
Leo Twyman Broughton was born December 20, 1918 in Emden, Missouri, a son of Oscar and Maria (Twyman) Broughton. He was united in marriage to Lucy Jane Yates on April 10, 1944 in Monroe City, Missouri. They began the early years of their marriage in North East Missouri where they farmed together. Following the birth of their eleventh child, Leo went back to school and received his Diesel Mechanics Certification. They eventually settled in Davenport and he retired from Dohrn Transfer.
During World War II he was proud to have served our country in the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving in the Pacific Theatre; including campaigns in Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, and New Guinea.
Leo had been an avid reader, and was interested in history. He also enjoyed antique tractors, and he especially enjoyed listening to Big Band Era music.
Memorials can be made to St. Anthony Church.
Survivors include his beloved wife of over sixty-seven years, Lucy, and children and their spouses, Jane Broughton, Davenport, Carol Broughton, Bettendorf, Margaret (Tom) Cunningham, Madison, WI, Catherine Broughton, Hoffman Estates, IL, Donald (Linda) Broughton, Apollo Beach, FL, Barbara (Craig) Hergenroether, St. Charles, MO, Patricia Wahlheim, Cedar Rapids, IA, Dr. Jacqueline (Stuart) Broughton- Armstrong, Rocklin, CA, Louis (Kimberly) Broughton, Dallas, TX, Leo Broughton, Jr., Dubuque, Mary O’Leary, Davenport, Joseph Broughton, Cedar Rapids, and John Broughton, Afghanistan; grandchildren: Mark Shaffer, Daniel Cunningham, Stephen Cunningham, Maureen Ruoff, Doug Broughton, Nick Broughton, Chris Wahlheim, Jessica Smith, Tara Hergenroether, Zach Hergenroether, Amanda O’ Leary, Erin O’ Leary, Aaron Broughton, and Benjamin Broughton; nine great-grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by a son, Michael Leo, and siblings, Oscar Broughton, Frank Broughton, Sr. Wilma “Posey” Broughton, Nancy Louise Hollander, Steve Broughton, and Maria “Sis”Yates. May they rest in peace.
