First-graders visit the Recycling Center and Transfer Station in Muscatine.

While learning the curriculum in all subjects, the first-graders at Saints Mary and Mathias are also learning to be stewards of God’s creation.

Their community service project for this school year is recycling. At the beginning of the year, they took a field trip to the Muscatine Recycling Center and Transfer Station where they learned the importance of recycling and taking care of the environment.

Each week they take pride in collecting paper, plastic, newspaper and cardboard from each room in the school. It is a fun job that they look forward to doing each week while working together to keep the school and God’s creation looking beautiful.
