One of my daily activities is checking websites that I find interesting. One of my favorite news sites is KCCI in Des Moines. I can find out road conditions, school closings and delays and breaking news in the Des Moines area.
A couple of days ago I was flipping through the news stories and couldn’t believe what I was reading. The headline was “Iowa Church Plans Porn Sunday!” Debra Heights Wesleyan Church will join with 350 other churches to tackle the problem of porn. The discussion will happen Feb. 6, the same day as Super Bowl XLV, and will focus on issues surrounding pornography.
Pornography accounts for $70 billion a year worldwide and $13 billion in the USA. More is spent on pornography than on professional baseball, football and basketball franchises.
A couple of weeks ago Women of Grace devoted almost two weeks of programs to the problem of porn addiction. In an online survey conducted by No-porn.com, 75 percent of respondents said they considered themselves addicted to pornography. While that is not a scientific study by any means, we do know that pornography is a huge problem and it seems that we are not willing to do much about it. Maybe we don’t know what to do. Congratulations to Debra Heights Wesleyan Church for having the courage to do something to bring the problem into the open.
In one of segments of Women of Grace, the guest, don’t remember his name due to old age, told about the effect that porn is having on marriages. It is becoming one of the most frequent causes of divorce and sexual dysfunction. Many are losing their jobs because they were caught watching porn on their work computer. Porn is ruining lives.
The organizers of Porn Sunday say that we as Church need to respond to this horrible problem. We need a national day of prayer and a national day of fasting. The Church needs a national day of porn, with direct and honest talk about the issues surrounding pornography.
In my opinion prayer, fasting and honest talk will do much to get the problem into the open where we can deal with it. Since porn is an addiction we need to combine some type of therapy with our prayer and fasting. I talked to a clinical psychologist and he told me that he has had referrals from the priest near his office. This is what needs to happen if we are going to change America’s porn habit.
Let’s hear your comments on this issue.
