Stephanie died peacefully Thursday, December 30, 2010 at her home in Davenport, after enduring many years of quiet suffering, and a very courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her passing.

She was proud to have graduated from Davenport North High School, class of 2002.

Stephanie had an extraordinary motherly instinct and had helped her mother, Janet provide licensed child care to many children. Steph’s beautiful smile and comforting brown eyes seemed to lull the young infants and toddlers and give them a sense of peace and comfort while under her care. She was a very nurturing young lady and had a gift with children. The family believes these kids were God’s gift to Stephanie to have the benefit of being a mother on earth. “We all know and believe she is already helping in heaven with the infants and toddlers that God has called home, and that she will guard them and keep them until their parents reunite with them in heaven.”

She was a member of Our Lady of Victory, the church choir, and a generous volunteer with different church events.

Her legacy will be the beauty and joy she spread to others throughout her life; she loved her family and friends with all her heart. She was a “social butterfly” and was always on the go, it was hard to keep up with Steph. She was an enthusiastic bingo player, and was jokingly referred to as a “professional bingo player.” She was also an avid Cubs fan, and enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially Hawkeye football.

Memorials can be made to a fund in Stephanie’s name, the Stephanie Vargas Memorial Fund.

Survivors include her mother and step-father, Janet and Calvin Christensen, Davenport; her father and step-mother, Francis and Jeanne Vargas, Rock Falls, Illinois; a sister and her fiancé, Jamie Lynn Vargas and Jason; grandmother, Annetta Walton – Medina; grandfather, Elias “Topper” Vargas, all of Davenport; her best friend forever, Nina Shields; Godparents, Joseph and Rita Sandoval; her beloved cat, Maddy Lynn; and numerous loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
