Introduction to Centering Prayer

IOWA CITY — A seven-session introductory course on Centering Prayer will be offered to the public beginning Saturday, Jan. 22, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The six remaining sessions will be on Monday evenings, 7–8:30 p.m., Jan. 24 to Feb. 28.  All sessions will be held at First Baptist Church, 500 N. Clinton, Iowa City. Cost for the series is $30, with scholarships available. 

Centering Prayer is a contemporary expression of an ancient practice rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition developed by the Trappist monk Thomas Keating and others. Information about the prayer practice and the worldwide, ecumenical spiritual network that helps support it is available at www.contemplativeoutreach.org.  Instructors for the Iowa City course, sponsored by Contemplative Outreach of Mid-Eastern Iowa, will be Mary Merkel-Hess, Cathy Chenard and Dorothy Whiston.
