LECTURES

Davenport — A forum discussing the works of Blessed John Henry Newman, a 19th-century British theologian who was recently beatified by Pope Benedict XVI, will be held from 3-4:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 22, in the Rogalski Center third floor Ambrose Room at St. Ambrose University. Father Ed Dunn, professor emeritus of theology, will offer reflections with responses from Rachel Serianz, professor of education, Paul Koch, vice president for academic affairs, and Owen Rogal, professor of English.

MEETINGS

Solon — “Strong Catholic Families: Strong Catholic Youth,” to be held at St. Mary Parish Oct. 28-29, will teach parish leaders how to train parents in forming children’s faith and explain why that training is important. Parents will have the opportunity to receive the training Oct. 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Schedule for Oct. 29 is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To register for Oct. 28, Oct. 29 or both dates, visit www.davenportdiocese.org. Potential trainers should attend the entire event. For Oct. 29, the cost is $25 per person ($75 maximum per parish). RETREATS

Davenport — St. Anthony Parish will hold its parish mission, “A Place at the Table,” Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. each night. Participants will explore how they are part of a reconciling community of healing and hope. Presenter is Father Joe Nassal, CPPS.

Washington — The retreat “Prayer as the Foundation of our Spiritual Lives” will be offered Oct. 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. James Church. Included are a noon meal, morning coffee and rolls. To register, mail a $15 check made out to “St. James Parish” to Fr. Bill Kneemiller, PO Box 187, Hills, IA, 52235. Davenport — The Kahl Home’s annual fall bazaar will take place Oct. 22 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.at 1101 W. Ninth St. There will be baked goods, crafts, holiday decorations and white elephant treasures. Proceeds benefit the Kahl Home for the Aged and Infirm.

Davenport — A trivia night will take place at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1111 W. 35th St., Nov. 5. Food and beverages will be available beginning at 6 p.m., and the game begins at 7 p.m. Cost is $10 per person; there may be up to eight people on a team. Prizes will be awarded. Themed baskets will be for sale, and there will be a 50/50 drawing. Proceeds benefit the Supplemental Emergency Assistance Program. To reserve a table, e-mail generboyd@mac.com.

Davenport — Our Lady of Victory Parish’s Christmas Carousel Bazaar will take place Nov. 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Featured will be handmade crafts, Christmas ornaments, baskets, a children’s room, pictures, linens, woods, florals, doll clothes, toys, fall items, a candy shop, bake shop and American Doll raffle. Breakfast and lunch will be served. A raffle offers cash prizes of $1,000, $500, $200 and $100.

Iowa City — Knights of Columbus will offer dinners from 5-7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month through November at the KC Family Center, 4776 American Legion Road. Keokuk — Church of All Saints’ fall festival and bazaar will take place on Sunday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Keokuk Catholic Schools, 2981 Plank Road. There will be tables full of antiques, heirlooms, collectibles, religious items, homemade baked goods, candy, crafts and Christmas items. Also included will be a “this and that” corner, almost-new items, Christmas cookie orders, frozen fruit pies and more. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., church members will serve a turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, a scrumptious apple salad, beverages and various deserts.  Dinner tickets are $8 for adults and $3 for children.  Also for sale will be $1 raffle tickets for prizes of $100, $200 and $500.

Melcher — Sacred Heart Parish will hold its fall dinner Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Turkey, ham, homemade noodles and more will be served. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-10 and free for children younger than 5.

Muscatine — Ss. Mary & Mathias Parish will hold an Octoberfiesta Oct. 24 from 1-5 p.m. at St. Mathias Church. German and Mexican food and adult and children’s beverages will be served. There will be family games, kids’ crafts, a rosary craft, cookie walk, apple dipping, yard games and live music.

Newton — The McCann flea market and craft sale will take place Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the McCann Center. Rummage goods, toys, baked goods, wood items, crafts, jewelry, ceramics and more will be featured. Rolls, soup, sandwiches, pies and beverages will be served. Proceeds go to the Sacred Heart Scholarship Fund.

Richmond — Holy Trinity Parish will hold its fall dinner of roast beef and pork loin Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $9 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-10. Country store items and hickory nuts will be for sale. Carry-outs are available: call (319) 656-2802.
