Thanks to those who help special-needs people

We would like to express our heartfelt (and long overdue) gratitude to Sharon Dodd of Special People Encounter Christ (SPEC), an organization that has been serving the spiritual needs of special-needs people for 30 years at Christ the King Parish in Moline, Ill.

The time flew as she described the program to St. Paul’s Works Social Action committee and guests at St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Davenport.

Special-needs people have too often been marginalized even as we recognize the considerable progress made in many areas.  We, as Catholics, have a particular obligation to be inclusive in that regard as Scripture calls us to be “doers and not hearers of the Word only.”

More recently St Paul’s Works committee members traveled to Clinton to join the L’Arche community for a prayer service. Again, we express our deep appreciation for the overwhelming hospitality shown us by Deacon Jeff Schuetzle, his assistants and the L’Arche community.

We are so fortunate to have such marvelous resources in both the Davenport and Peoria dioceses from whom we learn so much. With such knowledge, we are inspired to serve our special-needs people with wisdom, humility and joy as we recognize that they also have much to teach us.
