A funeral for David Wisniewski, son of Chet Wisniewski, activities director at Regina Catholic Education Center in Iowa City, will take place July 24 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Church in Iowa City.
David Wisniewski, 31, died July 2 at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. He suffered severe head injuries after a helicopter he was piloting was shot down in southern Afghanistan June 9.
He received the Purple Heart June 23, according to his family’s blog.
“He passed away peacefully and is with the good Lord taking excellent golf lessons from the greatest golfer ever,” the blog reads. “Thank you all for the prayers we have all received during this trying time.”
Visitation will be July 23 from 4-7 p.m. at St. Patrick’s. The family’s blog says a memorial service is scheduled for July 15 at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, where David Wisniewski was stationed.
He was engaged and had been in the Air Force for nine years. His co-pilot and the helicopter’s gunner also were injured in the crash, and four other troops onboard were killed.
