The son of Chet Wisniewski, activities director at Regina Catholic Education Center in Iowa City, was undergoing brain surgery early this week after a helicopter he was in was shot down June 9 in southern Afghanistan.

David Wisniewski, 30, was in critical condition and in a coma at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland on Monday, Chet said in a brief phone conversation from the hospital. He suffered severe head injuries, but scans showed some brain activity, his father said.

David’s co-pilot and the helicopter’s gunner also were injured. Four other troops onboard were killed.

David is stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and has been in the Air Force for nine years. He is engaged to be married.

Carol Trueg, Regina’s president, e-mailed school families last week asking for prayers for the Wisniewski family, including Chet’s wife, Beverly. Chet said the Regina community has been “very helpful.”

A blog offering updates of David’s condition is available at www.wisniewskiblog.blogspot.com.
