Bishop Martin Amos invites all Catholics to attend this year’s Chrism Mass at 5 p.m., March 22, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport.
During the Mass, Bishop Amos will bless the oil of the sick, oil of catechumens and sacred chrism for parishes to use throughout the year. Priests of the diocese also will renew their vows during the Rite of Recommitment to Ministry.
The oil of the sick is used to strengthen, console and heal the infirm. Oil of catechumens is used to strengthen people preparing for baptism. And sacred chrism is used to ordain bishops and priests, to confirm people, and to dedicate churches and altars. Parishes receive the oils on Holy Thursday, which this year is April 1.
