Funeral Services for Walter H. Martens, 88, will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport.  

Burial will be at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Walter died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010 at the Kahl Home for the Aged after a brief illness.

Walter Herman Martens was born March 10, 1921 in Davenport, the son of George and Mamie (Otto) Martens. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Loter on Dec. 4, 1941 in Davenport at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

He proudly served our country in the Army during World War II. in the Philippines.

Walter was employed as a meat cutter at the Eagles store on East Locust and retired in 1973 from the Rock Island Arsenal as a tool grinder after more than 28 years.

In his spare time, Walter enjoyed refinishing furniture and bass fishing.  He was an avid bowler, enjoyed cards, Ping-Pong, and was a devoted Hawkeye fan. 

Memorials may be made to Diabetes Association or the Kahl Home for the Aged.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Wallace and the Kahl Home for their special care and compassion shown to the Martens family. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Davenport; daughters, Sharon (Jim) Hancock, Barbara (Roger) Ossowski, and Katie Bloomer, all of Davenport; sons, Jim (Teresa) Martens, Bettendorf and Bruce (Gloria) Martens, Davenport; 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers and sisters.
