A former educator in the Diocese of Davenport, Sister Edith Giacomuzzi, (Sister Mary Frances Cabrini), died Oct. 31 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston. She was 82.
Born in Des Moines, she entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary on Sept. 8, 1945, and professed vows on July 28, 1948. Her education included an Associate of Arts from Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa, a Bachelor of Arts from Marycrest College in Davenport and a Master of Arts from Drake University in Des Moines.
Her ministry as a teacher or principal spanned 47 years and included many schools in the Diocese of Davenport: St. Alphonsus in Davenport, Our Lady of Lourdes in Bettendorf, St. Joseph in Fort Madison, St. Patrick in Ottumwa and other schools in Iowa and Minnesota. She retired in 1999.
Visitation was held Nov. 3 at Bishop Drumm’s Our Lady of Peace Chapel and Nov. 4 at the Humility of Mary Center, Magnificat Chapel in Davenport. Sr. Giacomuzzi’s funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Humility of Mary Center. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Davenport. A memorial Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Nov. 7 at St. Anthony Church in Des Moines.
