All welcome to Chrism Mass

Facebooktwittermail

All Catholics are invited to attend this year’s Chrism Mass, which Bishop Martin Amos will preside at March 30 at 5 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport.

During the Mass, Bishop Amos will bless oil of the sick, oil of catechumens and sacred chrism for parishes to use throughout the year. Also, priests will renew their vows during the Rite of Recommitment to Ministry.

Oil of the sick is used to strengthen, console and heal the infirm. Oil of catechumens is used to strengthen people preparing for baptism. And sacred chrism is used to ordain bishops and priests, to confirm people, and to dedicate churches and altars.

Parishes receive the oils on Holy Thursday, which this year is April 9.

The Davenport Diocese hopes Catholics’ presence at the Mass shows their thanks and support for priests’ ministry, and that the Mass reminds them all are called to service because of their baptism.
