Not ordinary times
To the editor:
The attack by the president on immigrants cannot be supported by Christians in good faith. Being silent about this evil is to be complicit.
The daily dose of lying from the White House seems to be accepted by many as just politics. Truth is sacred. God is Truth. Our duty is to defend the truth and oppose such evil as we defend our neighbor.
These are not ordinary times and our call from God will demand reflection, prayer and courage. This is not the time to be complacent. May Jesus have mercy on us and our country.

Faith focused on empathy
To the editor:
Dan Russo’s Feb. 5 column listed a variety of adjectives for Catholics. One he missed is “gutter Catholic.” That moniker describes an individual who adheres to the theology of the margins, resists the hijacking by far-right, wealthy and powerful forces, and faith that focuses on empathy and inclusion. Works for me.
