Deacon Sheil passes

IOWA CITY — Deacon Mike Sheil, 73, of DeWitt, passed away suddenly April 14 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Deacon Sheil was born October 27, 1951 in Rock Island, Illinois to James Bernard “Barney” Sheil and Marjorie Catherine Irish. After high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1970. He married his high school sweetheart, C. Patrice Wood (who Mike fondly called Cora); they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2021.

He completed the USMC Communications-Electronics School, Twentynine Palms, California. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa. He was ordained a deacon for the Davenport Diocese in 1988. Deacon Sheil served at St. Joseph Parish-DeWitt, Ss. Philip & James Parish-Grand Mound, St. Patrick Parish-Delmar and St. Ann Parish-Welton. He also assisted at Assumption & St Patrick Parish-Charlotte, Immaculate Conception Parish-Petersville and Ss. Mary & Joseph Parish-Sugar Creek.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughters Kathleen (Karl) and Amy (James); son Andy; sisters Pam (Jim) and Trish; brother Jerry; and several grandchildren.

His funeral was held April 22 at St. Joseph Church in DeWitt. Burial and military rites followed at St. Patrick-Villa Nova Cemetery.
