Br. Leveling to mark jubilee

Brother Wilbert Leveling, CSC, a former resident of Fort Madison, will celebrate his 70th jubilee as a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross.  The celebration will be held June 19 in Sacred Heart Basilica at the University of Notre Dame.

Born in St. Paul, Iowa, Br. Leveling was given the legal name of Clarence. He attended St. James Grade School in St. Paul and St. Joseph Grade School and High School in Fort Madison.

In 1939 he decided to become a teacher as a Brother of Holy Cross. He earned a B.A. and a master’s degree in U.S. history at the University of Notre Dame. He did post-graduate work at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and at Loretto Heights College in Denver.

He taught in Indiana, New York and Illinois. He returned to Notre Dame, and for 29 years he has worked in the archives of the Midwest Province of the Brothers of the Holy Cross.
