Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Leonard F. Lueders, 87, a resident of Davenport will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 916 E. Rusholme Street, Davenport.

Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Military graveside committal rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 26. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. There will be a prayer service offered at 4 p.m. Tuesday to begin the visitation. Additional visitation will be Wednesday in the gathering space at the church from 9-9:45 a.m.

Leonard died peacefully Friday, June 4, 2010 at Trinity Pathway Hospice Bettendorf following a lengthy illness and battle with cardiovascular disease.

Leonard Frederick Lueders was born July 20, 1922, in Davenport a son of Carl and Ella (Borck) Lueders.

He was united in marriage to Elaine E. Hostens on July 14, 1945 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Moline, Illinois.

Leonard was proud to have served our country during World War II. He was a member of the U.S. Army Tank Destroyer Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas.

He had a 35-year career in law enforcement. He retired in 1980 from the Davenport Police Department following 30 years of service to our community. He then served the on the Rock Island Arsenal Police Department for five-years, retiring in 1985. Leonard was a member of the Iowa State Police Association, Iowa Peace Officers Association and the Davenport Police Department Association.

Mr. Lueders had also been a member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral where he served as a senior volunteer, member of the Knights of Columbus 532, Loras General Assembly 4th degree, and Q.C. Times Plus 60.

He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather; and was truly a “family man” 

He had been an avid outdoorsman and hunter in earlier years, he loved to work the field with his beloved hunting dogs. He had also enjoyed camping with the family, and was a troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America and volunteered for the Girl Scouts of America.

Memorials can be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Assumption High School, or Trinity Pathway Hospice.

Survivors include his loving wife of nearly sixty-five years, Elaine, and daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon and Gene Carstens, Blue Grass, Iowa, Charlotte Carpenter, of Davenport, and Christine Holdren, Fullerton, California; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

His parents, and a sister, Eleanor Andre, preceded him in death.
