DAVENPORT — The Red Dinner to benefit Sacred Heart Cathedral is seen as a “friend raiser” and “community builder,” says Father Thom Hennen, the pastor.
Proceeds from the annual dinner at St. Ambrose University, scheduled June 16 after Mass at the cathedral, will help with “ongoing needs for the mother church,” he said.
Bishop Thomas Zinkula will preside at the 4 p.m. Mass. The celebration continues at the Rogalski Center on the university campus with a silent auction and cocktails at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m.
In years past, the main purpose of the Red Dinner was to help fund major building projects — the new diocesan hall and gathering space and significant renovations. “While the major projects are complete, there are always ongoing needs,” Father Hennen said. The cathedral is important to the diocese “not only because of its history and beauty but because of the various events we are privileged to host each year, such as the Rite of Election, Chrism Mass, ordinations, wedding anniversary celebrations, etc.”
Father Hennen will speak briefly about the meaning of a cathedral and identify things that have happened since his installation as pastor in 2021.
