TUCSON, Ariz. — Ottumwa native Father John Emanuel died April 12 at Copper Canyon Alzheimer’s Specialty Care Center in Tucson.

Born Sept. 12, 1949 to Dr. Dennis and Mary Emanuel, he attended Walsh High School in Ottumwa. He received a BS in medical records administration at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. He entered Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology in Franklin, Wisconsin where he finished his Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained a priest at the Cathedral of St. Augustine in Tucson in 1992.

Father Emanuel served as a diocesan priest in Arizona to be close to his parents who had retired there and were in failing health. Father Emanuel served in various capacities as pastor of several parishes in Arizona and recently as an assistant chaplain at St. Mary and St. Joseph hospitals and ministering to people incarcerated in Tucson.

Visitation is April 26 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Reece Funeral Home-Ottumwa. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of the Visitation Church-Ottumwa. Private burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
