To the Editor:
I appreciated reading in the May 9 Catholic Messenger about Sheri Steele becoming Catholic on her birthday May 6. We had a similar happening in our family this year.
At the Easter Vigil at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Des Moines (the Drake Newman Center) my son-in-law Dick Shepard was received into the Church on his 64th birthday! He was Presbyterian when he married my daughter Joann 23 years ago. All through the years he went to Mass and other church functions with her, and one day last fall he announced that he was going to start RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) to become Catholic. It took her by surprise.
I suffered a knee injury on Good Friday so I couldn’t be at the Vigil when Dick came into the Church, but I was cheering him on from Fairfield. It was a big day for him.
