Sunday of the Word of God, which Pope Francis instituted, takes place the third Sunday of Ordinary Time and reminds us that sacred Scripture is essential for the Christian life. “Devoting a specific Sunday of the liturgical year to the word of God can enable the Church to experience anew how the risen Lord opens up for us the treasury of his word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world,” the late pope wrote in his 2019 apostolic letter, “Aperuit Illis.”
The Diocese of Davenport will host a Sunday of the Word of God presentation Jan. 25 from 1-3:30 p.m. at St. Vincent Center in Davenport. A Zoom option is available. Matthew Coomber from St. Ambrose University in Davenport will explore the connection between the Scriptures we proclaim and profess, and our advocacy for the vulnerable in our world. A timely topic, given the Iowa bishops’ recent letter on immigration, the USCCB’s statement on the same issue, and Pope Leo’s Apostolic Exhortation, “Dilexi Te.”
