Lessons in Gregorian chant
To the Editor:
I found a neat resource for Gregorian chant that I’d like to share. The Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome recently launched a video series titled “Let’s Sing with the Pope,” which seeks to teach Gregorian chant ordinaries and other commonly chanted prayers, such as the Regina Caeli.
Father Robert Melhart, O.P., the rector of the institute, hosts the video segments, teaching, translating and leading the chants. The format is soothing and effective, with Father Melhart first singing the melody and then inviting the listener to sing along with him in small portions as the notes and words appear at the bottom of the screen. Finally, at the end of the clip, after some repetition and singing the whole way through, we sing along with video footage of the Holy Father chanting the same ordinary during Mass.
As of the writing of this letter, 10 clips have been posted to the institute’s YouTube Channel, Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra, with additional clips added weekly. Search “Let’s Sing with the Pope” to return to the series’ playlist.
I think it’s a great resource to tie the English and Latin text of the prayers together while rediscovering this musical style that’s designed for the common person, requiring minimal vocal talent to participate. Hopefully this helps others discover (or rediscover) our rich history of Latin and Gregorian chant, and someday, if they find themselves in Rome, they too can “Sing with the Pope.”
