Ten young adults are recipients of this year’s Marguerite Ritzinger Scholarship award. Thirty-six young adults applied for the one-year, $1,000 diocesan scholarships.
“This was a very strong applicant pool,” said Patrick Schmadeke, diocesan director of Evangelization and a selection committee member. Each recipient’s application stood out; choosing from among them was difficult, he added. “The applicants who demonstrated the spirit of a servant, disciple and evangelist are those that rose to the top… I am inspired by the dedication of these youths and by their commitment to parish life and the local community.”
Bishop Dennis Walsh sent letters to the following scholarship recipients:
Sam Aitchinson of Iowa City, St. Louis University.
Maggie Burchett of Davenport, Iowa State University.
Tyler Carber of Davenport, St. Ambrose University, Davenport.
Clare Loussaert of Iowa City, University of Iowa.
Daniel Mass of Bettendorf, St. Ambrose University.
Christina Reyna of DeWitt, Iowa State University.
Ellia Schmitz of Pella, Benedictine College, Atchison, Kansas.
Grace Tallman of Davenport, St. Ambrose University.
Joseph Tallman of Davenport, Iowa State University.
Anna Verry of Coralville, St. Ambrose University.
The late Marguerite Ritzinger, the scholarship’s namesake, was a Sigourney native who left money to the diocese to help with scholarships for seminarians and students attending colleges or universities. The scholarship program began in 2009.
