Justin Yim of Coralville, a fourth-grader at Regina Elementary in Iowa City, is the winner of this year’s Catholic Messenger Christmas card contest.

IOWA CITY — Although he has a love for art, Justin Yim, 10, was stunned to hear he had won the annual Catholic Messenger Christmas card contest. His was among 527 entries submitted this year.
The Coralville fourth-grader at Regina Elementary School in Iowa City was nervous because he had been called to the office during class. When told he had a phone call, he was happy to learn he was not in trouble. Instead, the caller congratulated him for being the overall winner of the Christmas card contest.

Justin said his teacher told students to be creative in the contest. When he heard that the Christmas card should be religious in nature, he said he thought of the stars shining down on Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. He used a mix of pencil, colored pencil and watercolor paints for his winning picture.
Earlier this year, Justin won first place in the inter-school All Saints Day prayer card contest, sponsored by the Regina Foundation. “I’m just happy,” he said of his artistic successes.
